This book is both the best and worst of tween books (not literature). While it has the pop culture reference factor by pointing to the girl made famous through Dance Moms and Sia videos, it is not a fine piece of literature. Maddie Ziegler is taking the publishing world by storm, with this hot new memoir and an upcoming fictional series.
In case you need to know who Ziegler is, I have posted a Sia music video.
The Maddie Diaries: a Memoir by Maddie Ziegler
Ever wanted a behind the scenes view into Maddie Ziegler’s life, this book provides new insight to her thoughts. Ziegler pulls from her work with Sia, to her work on the reality show Dance Moms, she gives advice to other girls her age and provides makeup/fashion advice.
I only knew about Maddie in her work with Sia, and this book did not provide new insight into her backstory. There were many things going on in this book from advice, to drawings, to tutorials, and fashion discussions. This book will be a great pop culture book for tweens, but I can’t see it standing the test of time. It was great for a book written by a 13-year-old for 13-year-olds, but it isn’t a masterpiece. I like what Ziegler tries to do in her book though.
