New Tween Title: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend

Hey all, it’s Sarah!

I was introduced to this book at BEA. The majority of this book is set in the Hotel Deucalion and I am currently taking notes on a hotel notepad. It feels like I took it from a real hotel. I am glad that I can now connect the item with the actual hotel. This is a fun new series, which I truly enjoyed.

Summary:

Morrigan Crow was born cursed and everything that goes wrong in her corner of the world is blamed on her. She spends much of her time apologizing to other community members for “spoiling their jams” and other preposterous things. It is foretold that Morrigan will die at midnight on her eleventh birthday. However, with a lucky twist of fate, several mysterious and magical beings offer to take her on as an apprentice. Morrigan thinks it is a joke because of her impending death, but she is soon whisked away to a new magical world. Morrigan’s new benefactor is Jupiter North, an esteemed member of the Wundrous Society and hotel owner. Morrigan is to take part in a trial along with 500 other child to obtain one of the few slots in the Wundrous Society. With the help of North and other new friends along the way, Morrigan goes on this wacky, magical, and compelling adventure.

Review:

I loved this book. I can’t wait for the next in the series. I found that this novel gave off Harry Potter vibes. Even though the plot isn’t really similar to HP, the characters and the adventures felt like the first HP books. The characters were well developed and nuanced, I absolutely love Fenestra, the large cat. I thought the Wundrous Society trials were clever and unique. I can’t wait to explore this world further and learn more about the characters.
