HI Everyone, it’s Becky! I have been a fan of C.C. Hunter’s book since way back in 2011 when I read “Born at Midnight” so I was extremely happy when I found “The Mortician’s Daughter: One Foot in the Grave” on Netgalley.
The Mortician’s Daughter: One Foot in the Grave by C.C. Hunter
Release Date: October 31
Seventeen-year old Riley isn’t enjoying her senior year. She is once again the new kid at her small Texan high school, her father is the town’s new mortician, and she has been abandoned by her boyfriend and her best friend. Oh, and Riley can see ghosts. During her first week in school Riley finds herself drawn into a possible murder mystery, being terrorized by the school’s head mean girl, and maybe developing a crush a too cute boy who just happens to be dead. Stuck between the living and the undead Riley must find a way to catch a murder and protect her heart.
There are two types of books out there in the world: the books that are written to win awards and books that are written to be entertaining. C.C. Hunter is a master at writing books that will entertain you and “The Mortician’s Daughter: One Foot in the Grave” is definitely entertaining. Our heroine is seventeen year old Riley who is funny and scrappy and torn between the world of the living and the dead. She is trying to make friends, deal with family issues, and stop herself from falling love with the wrong. She is real and she is believable as is her sarcastic new friend Kelsey and her possible love interest Jacob. Which is the real reason to read Hunter’s books…her characters. The characters who actually speak and act like real teens and not some kind of idealized teen specimens even as they go through extraordinarily supernatural trials they still feel real plus, they are really entertaining as they defeat evil and try to win over their crushes. “The Mortician’s Daughter: One Foot in the Grave” is a funny, quick read that will appeal to fans of romance and ghost stories who are also looking for a good dose of family drama.
Final Rating: 4 out of 5
