Mock Mondays: Caldecott Award

Hi Everyone!  It’s Becky.  Welcome to our first Mock Mondays post.  This week I will be sharing with you about a picture book that I think should be considered for the Caldecott Award.  If you are unfamiliar with the award it is given by the American Library Association to the illustrator that gave the most distinguished contribution to children’s literature. Here is my first selection:

34506939Title: If I Had a Horse
Author: Gianna Marino

Summary: A child dreams of finding a wild horse and befriending it before they go running with other wild horses.

Caldecott Consideration: Marino’s illustrations are breathtaking and immediately draw the reader into the magical world of the relationship between the child and horse. The warm colors that change to mimic the changing time of day add a dream like softness to the story and the simple silhouettes of the  child and horses bring the story to life.  The entire book is filled with complex detail hidden in what appear to be simple illustrations that will leave the reader wanting more.

Final Rating: 4 out of 5
