Happy Monday Everyone! It’s Becky and I am here to share with you my next selection of a book that I feel should be considered for the Newbery Award. In case you’re not familiar with the award it is a award given out annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished contribution for children’s literature. Book considered for this award must be aimed at an audience from birth to 14 years of age.
Title: Road Trip with Max and His Mom
Author: Linda Urban & illustrated by Katie Kath
Description: The sequel to “Weekend with Max and His Dad” Max must learn to overcome the anxiety. Max is anxious about his presentation at school and of being separated from his father during his trip to his mother’s family reunion. It is the first real vacation since his parents divorce and Max isn’t sure how to handle it.
Newbery Considerations: Urban’s Max books feel so much like a generation of Beverly Cleary’s Newbery Honor winning “Ramona” series. Max is the kid that younger readers can see themselves in and they will relate to his stories. His trying to figure out what it means to be the child of a divorce feels real and honest while still being a fun, light read and hopefully the Newbery Committee will take notice.
