Hiya everyone, it’s Sarah!
Title: The Night Diary
Author: Veera Hiranandani
1947 was a difficult time for the world, which was just healing after the atrocities of World War II. However, the bloodshed and turmoil were not over for the residents of India and newly created Pakistan. The recent independence from British rule has created a vacuum and the newly free residents must determine where the future of their countries will go. As people cross between borders and move throughout the countries, deadly skirmishes occur between the Muslims and the Hindis. Nisha, a twelve-year-old girl, is both Hindi and Muslim. As the discrimination rises around her, Nisha doesn’t understand why she can’t be friends with certain people and cannot see where her place is in the new Pakistan. When things become too treacherous, Nisha’s family flees to India. The journey is difficult, and Nisha learns the true good and bad of the world.
This beautiful book exposes readers to historical events that do not typically appear in American children’s literature. Readers will learn about famous people like Gandhi, but they will also be able to connect to characters from other parts of the world. Even in the face of adversity, friendships and families can still thrive.
