The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend Book Review

Hi Everyone!  It’s Becky, again.  I just finished the audio book or “The Trials of Morrigan Crow” by Jessica Townsend and I am here to share my reaction and thoughts.

Title: The Trials of Morrigan Crow
Author: Jessica Townsend
Format Note: I listened to the audio book.

34220519Summary: Everything that goes wrong in Morrigan Crow’s small town is her fault because she is cursed.  Morrigan is one of the children who was born on Eventide which means she is doomed to die on her 11th birthday.  But when the day comes Morrigan doesn’t die instead she is recruited by the mysterious Jupiter North to go to Nevermoor and to contend in a contest to see if she can join the Wonder Society.  Morrigan is excited by the opportunity to live a life where she is only accountable for her actions but is there something more happening in Nevermoor than she knows?

Review: This felt very much like a classic children’s adventure book and I mean that in the best way possible.  Morrigan is one of those scrappy heroines that readers will find themselves rooting for and will want Morrigan to succeed because she feels like a true hero and that is what heroes do.  Her adventures during the trials are fun and fast paced and feel reminiscence of great fantasy such as “Mary Poppins” and “Harry Potter”.   Adding, to the story is Townsend’s world building ability.  She has created the fantasy world of Nevermoor to be something that is quite unlike anything we have seen.  There are giant cats, chandeliers that grow, and a magical transportation system described in wonderful detail.  Towsend weaves together all the pieces to make a book that just feels whimiscal and cool and will be a great read for young readers.

Final Rating: 4 out of 5
