Hi All! It’s Becky. I have enjoyed Dana Simpson’s Phoebe and Her Unicorn series since I read the first book all the way back in August 2015. I was super excited when the Simpson’s newest graphic novel came out in October and I just finished reading it today.
Title: Unicorn Theater
Author: Dana Simpson
Summary: Phoebe and her Unicorn, Marigold, are planning on spending the summer together at drama camp. However, their fun summer gets derailed when Marigold’s sister joins them and the summer of two best friends becomes a summer of Phoebe feeling left out.
Review: This book was both everything I want out of a Phoebe and Her Unicorn book while, also, being just a little disappointing. Unicorn Theater has the same cute story of Phoebe and Marigold’s slightly unbalanced friendship but this time there are hurt feelings and lessons about friendship. However, this book felt like it was missing something. The quirkiness that makes the Phoebe and Her Unicorn comic strip collections so wonderful was missing. Plus, the novel’s story line felt a little too brief with the book feeling more like a comic book than a complete graphic novel. Longterm fans of this series will most likely enjoy Unicorn Theater but new readers really need to start somewhere else.
Final Rating: 3 out of 5
