The Controversial Princess by Jodi Ellen Malpas

Hi Everyone!  It’s Becky, again.  I have a bad habit of requesting YA audiobooks through Overdrive without actually reading the descriptions.  A few days ago I downloaded The Controversial Princess by Jodi Ellen Malpas assuming that it was a YA romance.  I was very wrong but the book was surprising and I’m very happy for my accidental request.

Note: I listened to the audiobook.

Summary: Adeline is the “Controversial Princess”.  The only daughter of the King of England, she refuses to follow the expectations of the Crown.  She knows what she wants and she goes and gets it.  Right now, she wants Josh Jameson.  Jameson is one of the biggest movie stars in the world and he has fallen under the princess’s spell.  Can the two fight against the forces trying to keep them apart to get their happily ever after?

Review:   When we review After by Anna Todd I could exactly explain why the domineering relationship between the main characters didn’t work for me.  Here is that review:

After reading The Controversial Princess I figured out what I didn’t like about After because of my reaction to Malpas’s novel that has similar themes.  The Controversial Princess is adult romance book that could have fallen into old traps that often befall romances: weak characters, a romance that’s not really romantic, characters that aren’t likable, and the instalove.  However, Malpas avoided all of those issues.  Adeline is one of the strongest female characters I have seen in a romance novel.  She is smart, beautiful, and has a sense humor.  Yet more importantly,  she is standing up for herself against her family, the press, and hundreds of years of tradition.  She is not going to back down until she gets what she wants and her actions make you want to cheer.  On the other hand, her love interest Josh is perfectly rugged and controlling but in the romantic gentle way that makes their story sizzling and kind of sweet.  Their romance plays out from attraction to love in a believable fashion.  The story is melodramatic in the best way like a great late night soap opera and the ending was overwrought but left me desperate for the next book.  I may have ended up with this book by accident but it should be a must read for adult romance fans.

Final Rating: 4 out of 5
