Mock Mondays: Caldecott

Hi All!  It’s Becky. I’m back for another year of Mock Mondays!  This week I will be sharing with you a picture book that I think should be considered for the Caldecott Award.  If you are unfamiliar with the award it is given by the American Library Association to the illustrator that gave the most distinguished contribution to children’s literature. Here is my first selection for 2019:

Title: My Heart
Author: Corinna Luyken

Summary: A poetic representation of how easy emotions can change and the importance of understanding yourself.

Caldecott Considerations: Luyken is the author and/or illustrator of several beautiful picture books and her latest book My Heart is just as gorgeous as her previous work.  Luyken uses a color scheme of yellows, grays, and blacks to create a feeling of warmth and love.  The illustrations are deceptively simple but shading and the constantly having backgrounds add depth and emotion to the story.  This is only the second book that Luyken has authored and it may get her noticed by the award’s committee.
