Mock Mondays: Newbery

Happy Monday Everyone!  It’s Becky and I am here to share with you my first pick of 2019 of a book that I feel should be considered for the Newbery Award.  In case you’re not familiar with the award it is a award given out annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished contribution for children’s literature.  Book considered for this award must be aimed at an audience from birth to 14 years of age.

40000227.jpgTitle: The Whispers
Author: Greg Howard
Summary: Riley needs to find the whispers.  The eleven year old knows that if he finds the mythological creature from the bedtime stories his mother used to tell him Riley will be able to solve the mystery of who took his mother.  Riley decides to go on a camping trip into the woods behind his house with his best friend, Gary, to offer a tribute to the mystical creatures so they will help him find his missing parent and heal his family.

Newbery Considerations: The Whispers is a story about loss and mourning that perfectly integrates LGBTQ themes.  Howard tells the story in lyrical and whimsical prose that will appeal to young readers and adults. The book is about life, growing up, and learning who you are.  Riley and his family perfectly illustrate the lives of hundreds of children across the country.  This honest portrayal of life and loss is exactly the kind of book that gets noticed by the Newbery Committee.
