Hi All! It’s Becky, again. I have wanted to read This Is Kind of an Epic Love Story since I first read a description of the book months ago. I finally got a chance to listen to the audio book. Here are my thoughts:
Title: This is Kind of an Epic Love Story
Author: Kheryn Callendar
Note: I listened to the audio book.
What’s It About: Nathan Bird’s life is getting complicated. His best friend, Florence, is also his ex-girlfriend who cheated on him with her new girlfriend. Nathan is trying to understand this new dynamic in his life when his former best friend Oliver James moves back to town. Nathan had a crush on Oliver James before he left and now that he is back Nathan can’t stop the old feelings from resurfacing. Can Nathan deal with his emotions and find happiness with his former crush?
The Good: Callendar has crafted a love story that feels truly believable. The author does a wonderful job of showing how relationships change and evolve over time. Nathan’s relationships with both Florence and Oliver James change and evolve and feel truly realistic. Also, Callendar does a fine job of exploring how loss effects a person. Nathan’s family is dealing with the death of his father and their reactions to this loss are believable and honest. Plus, the book has a truly excellent last line.
The Bad: I have to admit I was a little disappointed by this book. First, the love story didn’t really feel epic. It felt a little generic. Nathan’s narration was detached and I never felt like I got to know him. I wanted to root for his relationship with Oliver James but they never felt real enough for me to really care.
Bottom line: This is a simple story that never really comes to life but for people looking for a fast read feature LGBTQ romance may enjoy it.
