Happy Monday Everyone! It’s Becky and I am here to share with you my latest pick of 2019 of a book that I feel should be considered for the Newbery Award. In case you’re not familiar with the award it is a award given out annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished contribution for children’s literature. Book considered for this award must be aimed at an audience from birth to 14 years of age.
Title: The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise
Author: Dan Gemeinhart
Summary: Coyote and her dad, Rodeo, spend their lives driving across the United States on an old school bus. Their whole life is the experiences they find living on the road however their lives used to be different. Five years ago, Coyote and her dad had a normal house and a real family. That life was before the car accident that killed Coyote’s mother and two sisters and forever fractured their family. Coytote and her dad haven’t returned to their hometown in five years but now Coyote needs to go home and she will do whatever it takes to get there.
Newbery Consideration: The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise is a beautifully written book about mourning and loss. Coyote’s experience mourning her lost family is heartbreakingly realistic. The characters Coyote and Rodeo meet on their travel are perfectly crafted, each with their own their emotional journeys which teaches young reader empathy. This book is everything the Newbery Committee looks for and it may just find itself a medal winner.
