The Red Scrolls of Magic by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu

Hi All!  It’s Becky, again.  I am a huge fan of Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instrument Series.  I have been waiting with bated breath for her newest spin off series The Eldest Curse.  I finally got to listen to the audiobook and I am here to say that I was not disappointed.

30295312Title: The Red Scrolls of Magic
Author: Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu
Note: I listened to the audiobook.

Summary: Warlock Magnus Bane and his Shadowhunter boyfriend Alec Lightwood survived the Mortal War and now just want to relax.  Magus and Alec embark on a romantic world tour however they are barely out of New York when they pulled into a mystery surrounding a demon worshipping cult.

Review: At some point in the thousand of pages that is Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter saga my least favorite character from City of Bones become my favorite.  I can’t pinpoint when it happened, though it was possibly in Born of Endless Night, that Alec Lightwood became the reason I keep reading Clare’s books.  All of this is to say that I was primed to love The Red Scrolls of Magic even before I read the first page.  I was not disappointed as I read the story filled with adventure, romance and magic.  Fans of Clare’s other books will enjoy revisiting several characters from other books such as Aline Penhallow and Helen Blackthorn.  Fans will also be thrilled to read the beginnings of Malec as the two lovers get to know each other as they travel through European locations.  However, this book has the same issues as many of Clare’s other recent releases, if you are not a fan then this book may not be for you.  The characters and references that make this book so enjoyable to fans will be likely lost on new readers.  Yet, if you are like me and want to learn more about your favorite characters then this one is a must read.

Final Rating: 4 out of 5
