Hi Everyone! I have been a huge fan of Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me Series ever since I read the first book way back in December 2011. I was super excited for the newest book in series and unfortunately, for me, it didn’t quite live up to its predecessors.
Title: Defy Me
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Note: I listened to the audio book.
Summary: Juliette tried to be the supreme commander of North America but after disaster strikes she is taken to a place that she would have preferred to stay in her past. Can her friends free her before it is too late?
Review: I couldn’t quite figure out what was my issue with this book until I sat down to write this review. I honestly couldn’t think of how to describe this book. It wasn’t that there was so much going on that the book had too many details to summarize but instead Defy Me felt like a book in which nothing happened but everything changed. The book rewrites the characters histories changing much of the narrative of the series. Don’t get me wrong, I love big surprise twist in my books however these changes didn’t feel organic. The book felt jumbled like it was a spinoff that takes place in the same universe but with different characters…except it wasn’t. The characters that were so strong in past books come across as weak. Juliette (or should I say Ella?) is no longer a badass character but instead comes across as someone who needs to be protected. The series no longer feels like a book series about a strong female character but instead it is now a basic dystopian novel with a romance that overshadows everything else. Mafi is a skilled writer and that skill is evident in Defy Me however the addition of too many narrators and the rewriting of the characters and their stories left me disappointed and not sure if I will keep reading this series which I once loved.
Final Rating: 3 out of 5
