Hello Everyone! It’s Becky, again. I just finished A Danger to Herself and Others by Alyssa B. Sheinmel. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one and I was surprised by how engrossed I found myself.
Title: A Danger to Herself and Others
Author: Alyssa Sheinmel
Note: I listed to the audio book.
Summary: Hannah knows that everyone is confused about what happened with her and her roommate Agnes. Agnes fell from the window of their dorm. Hannah did not push her. They were just playing Truth and Dare. There is no reason for Agnes’s parents to blame her or for Hannah to be sent to an institution and she definitely shouldn’t be labeled as a danger to herself and others.
Review: I’m always a little hesitant about books with any kind of mental illness. After spending four years studying psychology I’m a little pickier than the average YA reader. However, Sheinmel hooked me in the first chapter and never let go. Hannah and her twisted mental journey was just the right balance of mystery and unreliable narrator. Sheimnmel created a world where any truth could actually be a lie and gave us a narrator who may not only be lying to us but also lying to herself. The book is well written while also being creepy and completely fascinating and should be a must read for fans of YA psychological dramas.
Final Rating: 4 out of 5
