Hi All! It’s Becky. A friend recommended Lamar Giles’ book Spin and I finally got a chance to read it. I had a mixed reaction to this book. Here are my thought.
Author: Lamar Giles
Note: I listened to the audio book.
Summary: Paris Secord was many things. She was a friend, a girlfriend, a granddaughter, and an up-and-coming music producer but Paris’ life was cut short in a moment of violence. Her death is an unanswered mystery that her friends, Kya and Fuse, must solve. The two team up to learn what happened to their friend but the more they look into Paris’ last day the more danger they find themselves in. Can Kya and Fuse solve Paris’ murder before they lose their own lives?
Review: I’m not sure how I feel about this book. In some ways it is an interesting film noir-ish murder mystery which will appeal to teen mystery fans. However, the way Giles wrote the mystery may turn off many mystery readers. The book is told in three alternating viewpoints with two of those viewpoints, Kya and Paris, feeling genuine and well done. Yet, Fuse’s narrative voice felt forced and like how an adult thinks a teen would sound. Her narrative may have been designed to add to the general mood of the story however it just became distracting after a while. Also, the resolution of the mystery felt a little obvious making the book unsatisfying for avid mystery readers. The novel is a diverse book with an interesting hook that may appeal to casual mystery readers but hardcore fans of the genre may want to look elsewhere.
Final Rating: 3 out of 5
