Hi All! It’s Becky. I’m back for another Mock Mondays! This week I will be sharing with you two picture books that I think should be considered for the Caldecott Award. If you are unfamiliar with the award it is given by the American Library Association to the illustrator that gave the most distinguished contribution to children’s literature.
Title: Two Brothers, Four Hands The Artists Alberto and Diego Giacometti
Author: Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan
Illustrator: Hadley Hooper
Summary: The true story of Swiss sculptors Alberto and Diego Giacometti as Alberto first rose to fame with his sculptures and then after his death Diego picks up the art.
Caldecott Consideration: Hooper created beautiful realistic images with vibrant colors that mirror the art of the Giacometti’s time. Beautifully realistic black sketches overlay the colors making the characters pop. The book is beautifully crafted and perfectly illustrates the art world that exploded in Paris in the early 1900s. The book is striking and bold and may just catch the attention of the Caldecott Committee.
