Teen Book Review: High by David an Nic Sheff

Hiya everyone, it’s Sarah!

I received this as an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I have read Tweak before and another of Nic’s fiction books, I expected this title to be told through a similar narrative style. However, this book is a solidly nonfiction teen title.

This work takes readers through all levels of addiction. It discusses the reasons surrounding drug/alcohol use and abuse. It discusses a variety of substances and their effects. It takes readers through the need of treatment and consequences of substance use. I didn’t think this was done in a heavy-handed way. I found that the narrative style was relatable, especially when addicts/real-life teens were given opportunities to sound off on topics. The visual graphics added to work, but were lost in translation with the audiobook, though overall it was a good audiobook. While I do not see myself giving this to many readers, I believe it holds an important place in the teen section of the library. It is important that this book is readily available to teens, so that they can explore it when in need.
