Pumpkingheads by Rainbow Rowell

Hi All!  It’s Becky, again.  I am a huge fan of Rainbow Rowell’s books so I was super excited when I read that she was writing a graphic novel.  I just finished reading it and here are my thoughts:

40864790Title: Pumpkinheads
Author: Rainbow Rowell
Illustrator: Faith Erin Hicks
Other Books I Have Reviewed by Rainbow Rowell: Wayward Son

Summary: Josiah and Deja have spent every October during their high school lives working in the local pumpkin patch.  They are best friends who have spent the last four years working the succotash stand while Josiah pines for the girl who works at the fudge stand.  Tonight is their last night at the patch and Deja is going to do whatever it takes for Josiah to talk to his dream girl.

Review: There were parts of this books that I really enjoyed.  There was something really sweet about Josiah’s love of the pumpkin patch which was innocent and enthusiastic in a way that male teens don’t get to be in YA lit.  Also, Rowell has proven herself as a master for creating quirky stories in unusual settings and Pumpkinheads is in no way different.  Deja and Josiah’s entire adventure takes place in just a few hours in a pumpkin patch which was kind of awesome.  The only thing that makes me not completely love this books was the format and the conclusion of Josiah and Deja’s relationship.  I often read YA novels and think that it would work better as a graphic novel however this is one of the few graphic novels that I have read and thought “wow, that really should have been a novel”.  Also, I was not thrilled with the romantic conclusion of Josiah and Deja.  Yes, it was obvious that’s where the story was going from the beginning but it just didn’t quite work for me.

Final Rating: 3 out of 5
