Hiya everyone, it’s Sarah!
I was super excited that Choi had a new book coming out. This was a great way to start my reading year. I did receive this as an eARC through Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
Title: Permanent Record
Author: Mary H. K. Choi
Pablo got into NYU, even though his mother didn’t support him because where is all of that tuition money going to come from! Pablo stuck to this plan, moved in with several other roommates, got a job at a local bodega and took out a ridiculous amount of student loan money. Pablo’s dreams have gone up in smoke, he basically failed out of NYU and bill collectors are starting to catch up to him. The only bright spot in his life is his sneaker and snack Instagram. Pablo loves working the overnight shift, because it is so much easier for him to coast through his shift. One night, pop superstar, Leanna walks into the bodega and the two strike up a relationship. Pablo must keep his romance with Lee a secret, which fans the flames of his garbage fire life. Will Pablo find his groove to adult and keep his new lady?
I really liked this book, not as much as the previous, but it was solid. The write style was on point, most characters were well developed. I loved the layer of snack creation. I totally wanted to hang out with Pablo and his roommates. I think the one layer that I struggled with the most, which was why I struggled with this book was the romance. I didn’t like Lee and I didn’t believe their romance. It was very insta-love, which is to be expected because she is a superstar. However, Pablo didn’t come across as that kind of guy and their conversations were pretty flat. I get why it was the way it was, it just wasn’t as enjoyable for me. I will totally continue to read books by Choi because I love her style, this one just didn’t vibe with me.
