Hi Everyone! It’s Becky, again. The Upside of Falling by Alex Light was one of my most anticipated reads for February 2020. I was excited when I got this eARC off of Edelweiss and the book definitely cute. Here are my thoughts:
Title: The Upside of Falling
Author: Alex Light
Note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher through Edelweiss, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Summary: Becca has never had a boyfriend and she’s okay with that fact. She doesn’t care that she hasn’t dated anyone, she’s happy to wait until college. However, when Becca’s former best friend calls her out for her lack of dating experience Becca makes up a mysterious new love. Becca’s little white lie quickly gets out of control when the school’s football star, Brett, announces that he is Becca’s mystery man. The two agree to fake date however their fake relationship quickly turns into real feelings.
Review: This book was definitely cute with a lot of fluffy moments that worked enough to served its purpose. Becca and Brett were perfectly fine main characters however they did feel a little undeveloped as did their relationship. The book moved them from strangers to liking each other to possibly being in love very quickly to the point that the story felt like an abridged version. I liked what pieces of their story that I got, however, I would have liked a whole lot more of their interactions and actually see their emotions and feelings grow. Also, I was a little thrown by all the family drama. I understand that parent issues are the bread and butter of the YA world but both Becca and Brett’s parent’s had horrible relationships which felt more than a little melodramatic. However, the book was quick and the story and romance were just a little cute and just a little sweet which made the perfect YA romance to get any reader ready for Valentine’s Day.
Final Rating: 3 out of 5
