Teen Book Review: Be Not Far From Me by Mindy McGinnis

Hey everyone, it’s Sarah!

I got this eARC through Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. I always gravitate towards McGinnis when she releases a realistic fiction book. Her tone of voice throughout the book always reminds me of her persona at book festivals, you know, a little bit flippant, witty, gritty and a nice dose of dark humor. The subject of this book was difficult to read because the main character is in a survival situation, but I can see readers responding to it.

Author: Mindy McGinnis

Summary:

Ashley has been interested in the wilderness and surviving within it, and not impacting the plants and animals around her. When Ashley parties with a group of friends in a state forest, she catches her boyfriend cheating. Ashley strikes back and takes off, too bad she is super drunk and loses her footing. After getting severely injured and completely separated from the group, Ashley must find a way to survive and get back home. Her injury and desperation for survival needs become more and more challenging as time goes on. Will Ashley be able to make it out alive?

Review:

I am so glad I did not listen to this. McGinnis is graphic and descriptive, which is a great thing. However, I am not the type of reader who wants to read through graphic descriptions of injuries and hunting. I think this book will appeal to a section of reluctant readers, who may not typically see themselves in books. It was a quick read that provided a great about of action.
