Hey everyone, it’s Sarah!
I received this as an eARC through Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. I think I was first taken by the cover art, which is gorgeous.
While I expected this to be a contemporary novel, it is truly a dystopian novel with girl gangs.
Title: Dealing in Dreams
Author: Lilliam Rivera
Chief Rocka, Nalah, leads Las Mal Criadas a gang of young women, who are one step away from joining Déesse‘s army, which will allow them to live in the prestigious Tower. As the crew prepares to trounce their arch rivals, Déesse, through her son, asks Chief Rocka to throw the fight. The mystery deepens as Chief Rocka and her crew find an addict with the sign of a long dead gang. The gang is sent outside of their city to find information for Déesse and hopefully solidify their spot in the Tower.
I thought this book was dry. I needed more character development so that I could better connect to the story. I think the world building and concept were well done, but I found that I needed more from the characters to get invested in the story. For example, further working through Nena’s experience with warring gang would have been compelling. If there was a second book in this potential series, I don’t know if I feel the need to revisit it.
