Hi All! It’s Becky, again. I loved Rae Carson’s Fire and Thorns Series and I was thrilled when I found out the author would be revisiting the amazing world. I just finished listening to the audiobook and this one did not disappoint.
Title: The Empire of Dreams
Author: Rae Carson
Note: I listened to the audiobook.
Summary: Almost a decade ago, Red Sparkle Stone was saved from the life of servitude by Empress Elisa. Red has enjoyed her life growing up in the palace and she is just moments away from being adopted by the Empresses. However, when a political opponent blocks the adaptation Red must find another way to prove her loyalty to the Empire. Red now finds herself enrolled in the royal guard training academy and if she can prove herself she will have a new successful career but if she fails it may cost her her life.
Review: There was so much of this book that I enjoyed because it was just really fun to read. Carson took the character of Red who was just a child at the end of The Bitter Kingdoms and turned her into a strong warrior. It was kind of awesome to read. Red’s experiences at the academy were incredible. The lessons Red endured at the academy of the challenges she had to face were fascinating and just fun. I also loved visiting with Elissa and Hector and one of my few complaints with the book is that I didn’t get to see more of them. Plus, as a fan of palace intrigue, Carson hooked me from the first whisper of a plot against the crown. However, I didn’t love all the flashbacks to Red as a child. I knew her life had been hard and I didn’t need to relive it. Each flashback was to build the character but it actually pulled me out of the modern story and slowed the pacing of a novel that was otherwise wonderfully fast-paced. Yet, if you push aside all the issue of the flashbacks Carson has crafted a must-read fantasy book filled with incredible characters, mystery, and adventure.
