TBR Thursday: Grim Shadows by Jenn Bennett

Hi Everyone!  It’s Becky, again.  I am a big fan of Jenn Bennett’s YA books and I had previously read her Bitter Spirits a couple of months ago.  I immediately put Bitter Spirits’ sequel on my TBR list.  I finally got to listen to the audiobook.  Here are my thoughts:

21560403Title: Grim Shadows (Roaring Twenties Book 2)
Author: Jenn Bennett
Note: I listened to the audiobook.

Summary: Lowe Magnusson is an archeologist straight off a mission in Egypt.  On his journey home he meets Hadley Bacall and the two’s destinies are entwined by a mystery surrounding an ancient Egyptian amulet that has connections to Hadley’s past.  Hadley desperately wants to find the amulet to free her family of a curse while Lowe only wants to sell the artifact to free himself of debt.  Hadley and Lowe will team up to find the artifact while trying to fight an undeniable attraction.

Review: There were so many parts of this book that I enjoyed.  The basic plot of supernatural beings and curses in the 1920s is awesome and what made the book a fun read.  However, I had a slight problem with aspects of the book beyond that basic plot.  Bennett’s is a master at creating interesting settings but I found the settings in Grim Shadows to be lacking her usual spark.  Also, for a book that is billed as a romance, I thought that Lowe and Haley lacked any real sizzle until almost two-thirds of the way through the book.  Plus, the ending felt a little anti-climatic and I would have liked a little more resolution.  Yet, even with those issues, this is a Jenn Bennett book and even her weakest book is better some author’s best which means that Grim Shadows is worth reading and I will likely read the sequel.

Final Rating: 3 out of 5
