Hi Everyone! Its Becky. Welcome to Mock Monday: Printz Award. For anyone not familiar with the Printz Award it is an award given by the American Library Association for the best example of teen literature from the previous year. You can find more information here. Here is my selection:
Title: Clap When You Land
Author: Elizabeth Acevedo
Summary: Camino Rios spends her school year waiting for her father to visit her in the Dominican Republic over the summer. Yahaira Rios’ father leaves every summer to travel to the Dominican Republic. The two girls are sisters but they have never met. Their father has kept his two families separate and secret but his lies will be revealed after a plane crash. Now, Camino and Yahaira must navigate a world where they have each lost a parent but gained a sister.
Printz Considerations: The Printz committee often recognizes books about teens struggling to find their place in the world and Clap When You Land is all about finding your place in the world and in your family. This book about loss and personal growth is beautifully written in lyrical verses which are honest and emotional. Acevedo is a master at creating strong characters and Camino and Yahaira are perfectly crafted and basically walk off the page. The book is heartfelt and heartbreaking as well as gorgeously crafted. Acevedo won the Printz award for The Poet X and she may get recognized by the committee again.
