Title: Full Disclosure
Author: Camryn Garrett
At birth, Simone was born with HIV and has coped with it throughout her life. While she isn’t embarrassed of her diagnosis, others can be extremely judgemental and prejudiced. Her adoptive dads try to protect her and love her through everything, but as Simone gets older things become more difficult. Simone is romance crazy and needs to prepare for eventually having sex, even if it makes her dads uncomfortable. They have become even more protective after Simone’s best friend at her old school outed her diagnosis to the entire school, which led to Simone being bullied out of the school. At her new school, Simone makes a few friends though she keeps her HIV a secret. Simone is directing the school’s musical and has started to flirt with cute guy, Miles. An anonymous person finds out about her diagnosis and threatens to tell the school if she doesn’t stop dating Miles. Simone wants to control her own narrative, but this bully is making things difficult. Will Simone be able to stay at her new school, or will her status make it impossible?
This book was awesome. I loved the main character and how real she was. She asked sex questions that all teens have at her age, even if they have a slightly different tinge to them. Simone made the challenges of growing up normal and gave some much needed insight into the life of someone with HIV. Simone dealt with prejudice from many different angles because she is an African American woman who is bisexual and HIV positive. There are many preconceived notions people have of her, but Simone is a strong young woman anyone would want in their corner. I loved the romance and the friendships and enjoyed my journey in this book.
