I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo

Hi All!  It’s Becky, again.  I enjoyed The Way You Make Me Feel by Maurene Goo so I had to listen to her book I Believe In A Thing Called Love when I found it on Overdrive.  This book was cute but didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

Summary: Desi Lee has a dream.  She is going to go to Standford and become a doctor.  She is the top student in her class, a star on her soccer team, and class president.  The only thing Desi can’t do is flirt.  She epically fails at flirting or even talking to a cute boy.  When Luca a mysterious new boy transfers to her high school Desi is immediately drawn to him but she knows she will never get him on her own so she creates a plan.  Desi turns to the place that she can learn about relationships…K-Dramas.  Desi is going to create a plan using the lessons from Korean dramas to win Luca over and have an epic romance.

Review: This is one of those books that I wanted to love but I just didn’t get there.  This book started on a very high note.  Desi was a wonderful main character who was smart and driven which I thought was just neat.  Also, this book had some seriously funny moments.  I laughed out loud at Desi’s flirting fails.  Plus, I love a book that has a positive child-parent relationship, and Desi and her father had a great caring and realistic relationship.  I also loved Desi’s journey into the land of K-Dramas which was an adorably fun premise.  I loved her lists and her obsessive need to succeed at her mission no matter what.  I loved that!  I did have a slight problem with all the lying.  The first third of the book all I could think about was how much I was enjoying the story then all I could think about was how much Desi was lying to Luca.  There were times that she put him or herself into real danger which I found myself growing more uncomfortable with as the book progressed.  I loved the rom-com of this book but I just never really got past some of Desi’s negative behavior.  This book is funny and has cute moments but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

Final Rating: 3.5 out of 5
