Hi All! It’s Becky. I’m back for another Mock Monday! This week I will be sharing with you a picture book that I think should be considered for the Caldecott Award. If you are unfamiliar with the award it is given by the American Library Association to the illustrator that gave the most distinguished contribution to children’s literature.
Title: Old Rock (Is Not Boring)
Author: Deb Pilutti
Summary: All the animals and trees in the forest think Old Rock has been sitting in the same spot forever however Old Rock has had an adventurous life. Old Rock will tell his friends about the journey he took to get to his new home.
Caldecott Consideration: Pilutti’s book is full of vibrant colors that contrast beautifully with stark white backgrounds on several of the pages. Also, the white space is used carefully to highlight important moments in the story as does the different formats and shapes of the illustration layouts. Piluti uses perspective to give the illustrations incredible depth and details which make the images look so much bigger than the average picture book. Plus, the placement of the text is fun and adds perfectly to the overall aesthetic of the story. Old Rock (Is Not Boring) is a colorful and beautiful book that may just get the Caldecott Committee’s notice.
