Middle Grade Book Review: We Dream of Space by Erin Entrada Kelly

Howdy everyone, it’s Sarah!

I love Kelly’s books, they are always such fun realistic middle grade novels. While she does mix in historical fiction, the stories feel so real and relevant they transcend time. When I found this ARC from the publisher, I could wait to read it.

Author: Erin Entrada Kelly

Summary:

Siblings, Cash, Fitch, and Bird, are struggling to grow up during the late 1980s. These siblings are not close and have very separate lives. Cash struggles with school, but is a popular jock. Gamer Fitch struggles with his temper and gets in many physical altercations. Bird just seems like a planet unto herself, though she is desperate to connect with her brothers and even have family dinner. She is given the opportunity when all three siblings find themselves learning from the same teacher. This awesome science teacher applied to go to space, though she wasn’t chosen, she plans to educate her classes about space. Bird takes the space project to heart and builds her life around NASA’s upcoming mission to the sky. However, when a tragedy takes place, the family is going to need to pull together to survive it.

Review:

The characters of this book were not as likeable as Kelly’s others have been. I actually still don’t feel like I know them. However, this book has sticking power, I still find myself thinking about it even months later.  The 1986 teacher mission to space was a wonderful and informative layer to the story and certainly something that I am glad to have explored.
