Hi Everyone! It’s Becky, again. I have been a fan of Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter books for many years and The Lost Book of the White was one of my most anticipated book of the year.
Title: The Lost Book of the White
Author: Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu
Note: I listened to the audiobook.
Summary: Alec Lightwood and Mangus Bane have found a happy life with their new son, Max, in Brooklyn. However, when their apartment is broken into, and the Book of the White is stolen, they must team up with their friends and travel to Shanghai to reclaim the book.
Review: This book was a little uneven for me. I really enjoyed seeing more of Magnus and Alec’s life together. Over ten books I have followed them from flirty, to love, to domestic happiness, and getting to read about moments between them and Max was just really fun, almost like revisiting old friends. I also really enjoyed Max’s experiences with his babysitter which were just perfectly silly. However, I never really found myself intrigued by the villain who just seemed a little over the top for me. I love bad guys that make me root for them, even if it’s just a tiny bit, however, this bad guy was just super irritating and I just wanted him to be defeated quicker and in a more painful way. Also, and I feel a little silly about this, I felt like the other Shadowhunters didn’t quite feel true to themselves in the other books. Jace, Isabelle, and even Clary didn’t speak or behave as they did in past novels. It is a silly issue to have but it is an issue that I experienced and it was slightly jarring while reading. Yet, even with those issues, this was a fun, fantasy book that’s fans of Clare’s will enjoy.
Final Rating: 3 out of 5
