Teen Book Review: Best Laid Plans by Cameron Lund

Hey everyone, it’s Sarah!

I saw the author speak at one of the web events this summer and wanted to read what she had written. The author was funny and interesting, so I was intrigued to see what her book would be like.

Title: Best Laid Plans

Author: Cameron Lund

After walking in on one of her friends losing her virginity, Keely realizes that she is the last person in her friend group to still be a virgin. She is feeling left behind and is determined to have this experience before going to college next year. Keely meets a cute guy working at a video store. He is older and suave like James Dean, she has decided that he will be the one she loses her virginity to. However, because he is older and more experience, she decides to enlist her best friend, Andrew, to help her become more experienced. While this arrangement is purely to gain experience Keely and Andrew may have more than just friendly feelings for each other.

The description of this book doesn’t truly get to the heart of the plot. The arrangement between Keely and Andrew occurs nearly half way through the novel. Most of the book is Keely talking about her lack of sexual experience and the sexual exploits of her friends. The novel attempts to take a stand for women’s sexuality, but it crosses into slut shaming and misogyny. There was a major part of the ending that I took issue with and how it was resolved. It felt like the quintessential example of white privlege. I had hoped for more from this book. I wish the author well, but this novel didn’t work for me.
