Hi Everyone! It’s Becky. I enjoyed the first book in Tessa Bailey’s Broke and Beautiful Series, and I decided to give the second book a try. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first book.
Summary: Honey Perribow just moved to New York City from her family’s farm in Tennessee. Honey dreams of being a doctor, but she also dreams of her professor, Ben Dawson. The two have an encounter outside the classroom, and sparks fly, but can they be together when it could cost them both their professional futures?
Review: I was a little disappointed by this book. I am a fan of romance books with strong female characters, but to me, Honey seemed like the teenager her lover/professor implied she was. Everything from her name to the fact she lets a man she is romantically involved with refer to her as Lolita, and her behavior feels like it belongs in high school. Also, I never really warmed up to Ben. He didn’t do anything to make me care about him or his relationship. For most of the book, he was whiny, and he needed to get over his family issues. Plus, as someone who has worked in academia, I don’t buy the idea of him being able to switch jobs between two very elite universities. It’s not that’s simple to get one of those jobs, let alone getting two of those jobs. This book was short, but with the wishy-washy characters and lack of compelling story, it felt long and took way too long to read. I want to love this book, but after reading it, I may have to give up on this series.
