Middle Grade Book Review: Skunk and Badger by Amy Timberlake

Hey all, it’s Sarah!

I am still working through Newbery potentials, and I am still flummoxed. This novel has been getting buzz and it will be a great read for the younger chapter book readers.

Title: Skunk and Badger

Author: Amy Timberlake

Illustrator: Jon Klassen

Summary:

Badger’s aunt allowed him to stay at her apartment, while she was away. He uses his time to think sciencey things and explore his rocks. One day, Badger gets a new unexpected roommate, Skunk. Badger’s quiet isolated life is shattered with gregarious Skunk and his chicken best friends. Will Badger adjust or is Skunk going to need to pack his bags?

Review:

This will be a challenging read for the young precocious reader, those who have outgrown the “babyish” First Readers. It harkens back to many of the classic novels, and may just take the medal. I wanted more, but as I reflect, it was perfect for what it was…I really could see it winning.
