Hey all, it’s Sarah!
I have been meaning to read this book since I saw it on many mock lists. Once it was honored with Printz recognition, I knew I had to read this book.
Title: Apple: Skin to the Core
Author: Eric Gansworth
This memoir brings the reader through Gansworth’s life growing up as a Native person in America. He speaks to the severe poverty and the struggle for opportunity in his hometown. He talks about preconceived notions white people have about Native people and begins the dialogue for change.
I wish I had more to say regarding the summary, but the book never hooked me and so the brief summary is all I gained from it. I felt the narrative was dry and it didn’t hold my interest. I suppose for strong memoir readers or avid nonfiction readers, this work would be a great pick, but it didn’t work for me. Even with the book being in verse, it still moved slowly.
