Mock Mondays: Caldecott Awards

Hi All! It’s Becky. I’m back for another Mock Monday! This week I will be sharing with you a picture book that I think should be considered for the Caldecott Award. If you are unfamiliar with the award it is given by the American Library Association to the illustrator that gave the most distinguished contribution to children’s literature.

Title: The Rock From the Sky
Author: Jon Klassen

Summary: Turtle has a favorite spot to stand, and he invites his friend Armadillo to stand with him. Armadillo gets a feeling that something bad might happen, and it may be the rock falling from the sky.

Caldecott Considerations: Jon Klassen has been recognized by the Caldecott Committee three times in the past.  The Rock From the Sky features all elements that make Klassen’s books great. The book’s format changes to highlight the story, with some double-page, spreads not having text, other pages being white with text, and others with text across the part. The background colors illustrate the movement of time and enrich the story’s pacing. The characters are simple, but their eyes give them surprising emotional depth. Klassen’s book appears simple, but it may get him noticed by the Caldecott Committee again.
