Teen Book Review: Happily Ever Afters by Elise Bryant

Happily Ever Afters (Happily Ever Afters, #1)

Title: Happily Ever Afters

Author: Elise Bryant

Tessa writes fanfiction of her life and the only person she shares her work with is her best friend. Tessa gets into a prestigious arts academy because someone submitted her private writing. While that is all water under the bridge, she is learning to navigate a new town and school. Her older brother has mental challenges and is having difficulty fitting into their new neighborhood. Tessa’s parents are more focused on her brother, while she suffers from the worst writer’s block ever. Using her best friend’s plan to create her own romance, Tessa hopes that if she lands a guy it will stimulate her writing again. Nico, looks just like the protagonists in her novels, so even though he has a girlfriend, she has decided she is going to get a happily ever after with him. But is he really everything she imagines him to be?

I enjoyed this novel. I liked how it elevated romance writing to being just as valid as any other writing. Tessa navigates being from a mixed racial background, to issues related to existing in the world with her brother. I like that not everything is perfect and rosy with her family and that she navigates the challenges in realistic ways. I will be reading the next book in the series.
